How to be Green with Natural Skin Care Products
Your skin is not only the first thing about you that everyone sees, but it’s also the largest organ in your body. Yes, your skin is an organ. As an organ, its main job is to protect your internal organs and the rest of your body’s insides, not only from falling out but also from things outside of the body that could do you harm, like germs. It’s your body’s armor and it needs to be taken care of properly. That’s why so many people look to moisturizers and other skin care products to help them take care of their skin.
We’re now taught as youngsters that we need to do everything we can to take care of our skin, which includes using moisturizers and other skin care products manufactured for those purposes. We’re told that the skin needs as much moisture as possible, and that we need to use sunscreen to protect our skin from the damaging rays of the sun. However, when you consider that these products tend to have harmful chemicals in them, it makes the good things that they do seem a bit overrated.
Most of the chemicals that are used in skin care products are relatively safe, when they’re used in small doses. Now, stop and think about the amount of times that you have put lotion on your hands or that you’ve slathered sunscreen over your entire body to avoid getting sunburn. The amount of chemicals that your body eventually manages to soak up, as the body is much like a sponge, is astounding, and that means that you’ve been exposed to some bad chemicals.
Avoiding Bad Chemicals
So how do you avoid the bad chemicals? The first thing to do is to avoid purchasing them in the first place. In order to do that, you simply have to know what you’re looking for. Read the labels on products before you purchase them and print out a list of all of the bad chemicals that are regularly found in skin care products. Take the list with you when you go shopping and make sure that you read the labels and avoid purchasing skin care products that have bad chemicals in them. Another thing that you can do to ensure that your skin gets the care it deserves without having to be exposed to chemicals is to make the products yourself.
Making Skin Care Products
It can actually be very easy to make your own skin care products, especially if you’ve got a bit of time and are ready to do some research. A bit of craftiness and you can make not only products that have no chemicals in them, but also products that smell delicious and that work just as well as the products you find in the store.
Take shaving cream, for instance. Most women and men need shaving cream and use it a few times a week at least. Do you know how many chemicals you can find in shaving cream? Instead of buying shaving cream, make your own! All you’ll need is some sunflower oil, unscented glycerin soap, a double boiler, and a cup or a mug that you can put everything in. Simply melt the glycerin soap in your double boiler, add in the sunflower oil, and then put the mixture into a mug once you find that everything has melted. Then, set it aside until you’re ready to shave. Once it’s time to shave, add a tiny bit of water, and move it around until the lather builds up, and then you’ve got some shaving cream!
If you want to make homemade lotion, it’s very simple. All you have to do is to get some distilled water and some olive or almond oil along with liquid lecithin, which you can find online. You simply mix the ingredients together and you’ve made a lotion. One thing that’s great about homemade lotion is that you can add whatever type of smells you like, or whatever vitamins you want. Add some Vitamin E oil or try some Myrrh oil. Both are great for the skin and help to moisturize it.
Do you want to spoil yourself a bit? How about a facial! There’s nothing better for a facial than expired yogurt. Let yogurt expire for a few days and then take it out of the fridge. Add a half a cup of honey to a cup of expired yogurt and then blend up a cup f cucumber and add it in. Put it on your face and let it set for fifteen minutes. You’ll not only have deliciously smooth skin afterwards, but you’ll be able to be happy in knowing that you have reused something that you would have otherwise thrown away!
