How to Find Good Organic Snacks for You and Your Kids

When the school bell rings, and the children finally get home after a long day of matriculating, they immediately want to get something in their tummies, and they head for the snacks. Have you actually taken a look at the snacks that are in the snack isle at the grocery store? Turn the boxes around the next time that you go grocery shopping and start looking at the ingredients that go into these snacks. These ingredient lists almost always include tons of preservatives and chemicals that you definitely wouldn’t find in nature. And yet we give our children these snacks when they come home –why? Because it’s just easy. But it can be just as simple to get your child a healthy, organic snack.

Organic Snacks

Organic snacks are snacks that are made using things that can be found in nature and that have not been exposed to manmade chemicals or fertilizer. There are very strict rules about what can be labeled as organic; therefore, you know whenever you see something in a grocery store that is labeled organic, it truly is. But organic foods can be a bit more expensive than the other foods you find in a grocery store. This is because growing things organically actually costs a little more. If you’re a mom or dad on a budget, it can be very difficult to think about getting organic snacks for your child. There are, however, a few little tricks that you can use to get organic snacks that your child not only loves, but that your wallet will love, too.

Organic on a Budget

Before you start buying organic foods, it’s a great idea to figure out what your child will eat and what they won’t. It would be horrible to purchase a lot of snacks for a high price and then find out that no one in the house eats them. Instead of buying a whole bag of something, try to wait until there is a sample of it at your local grocery store. Or, if possible, ask a friend if they have ever tried it and if they have a small amount that you can taste. Many organic food stores actually offer taste tests if you simply ask them, and this can help you figure out whether or not your child really does like the snacks that you’re thinking about buying.

Another thing to do is search for sales – keep your eyes on the grocery ads in the newspapers. There are now more organic sales going on than ever before because so many people are interested in buying organic. This means that you’ll be able to find great prices on the items you want to buy and try as snacks for your family. Wait until there is a sale and then buy multiple amounts of that item, if it’s something that doesn’t spoil quickly and/or is non-perishable.

Fruits and Veggies

It’s also a great idea to go back to basics when you’re talking about snacks – fruits and veggies! Organic fruits and vegetables are easy to find nowadays, especially if you frequent your local farmer’s market. Even the grocery store has specials on fruits and vegetables, which can help you to save tons of money. Cut up an apple or take apart an orange when your child comes home from school. There are even some simple ways that you can put together a snack for your child before they need it. If your child loves apples, for instance, try squeezing a bit of lemon juice on the apples – this keeps them fresh and keeps the brown spots away from them. Carrots stay beautifully fresh when they’re cut up, as do cucumbers and celery. Add some organic peanut butter to the celery and you not only have a very nutritious snack, you also have an extremely healthy one.

Junk Food

While it’s great for your child to eat healthy, you can’t deny them a little bit of junk food. Children love chocolates and sweets, and why would you want to completely take those away from them? You can let them have some sweets, and you can find many that are organic, which means they’re fairly nutritious and your child can enjoy something deliciously wicked. For instance, you can find chocolate toaster tarts in your local organic isle that are very chocolaty to enjoy, but that are still made organically, which is better for your child to eat. And you can even find jellied fruit snacks and othersimilar foods which taste great and that are healthy as well. Snacks don’t have to be boring, nor do they have to be extremely expensive. Organic snacks can be enjoyed by not only children, but adults as well! Look for new options in the organic section of your grocery store.
