Are you someone who likes to dine at the drive-thru window? Unfortunately, we’ve become a society where we spend a good amount of time living with drive-thru windows and fast food choices. We believe that we’re too busy to make dinner, or that we don’t have enough energy after working an 8 or10 hours to put together a delicious meal. But all of this eating out is not doing your body any good. Foods that come from a drive-thru are often saturated in fat and, in the majority of cases, are not made with organic foods.
What Are Organic Foods?
You may have been hearing a lot lately about organic foods. More and more people are jumping on the organic food bandwagon. But what, exactly, constitutes food that is organic? If you were to see an organic carrot in the grocery store, it might look pretty similar to a carrot that isn’t labeled as organic. So why is one carrot labeled organic and the other not? In order for a food to be labeled organic, it has to meet specific regulations set by the OFPA, or Organic Foods Production Act. This act states that in order for a food to be labeled organic, at least 95% of the food needs to be made without using any sort of processing.
You would likely be surprised at how many foods you currently eat that actually carry trace amounts of things like pesticides and processed fertilizers. There have been a number of studies done which show that the foods grown around these types of items are not as nutritious for your body as organic foods. If organic foods are better, why isn’t every farmer growing organic produce? Because it’s much more expensive, and time-consuming, to grow a garden, or to raise meat, organically than it is to use manufactured products like fertilizer and pesticides. Because of this, the price of organic items is usually higher than the price of non-organic products. This is one reason why some people tend to shy away from them.
Shopping At Your Grocery Store
Almost every grocery store has organic foods now because they know that people have the desire to eat foods that are healthy. But, honestly, the price of organic foods can sting a little bit more than the cost of foods that are not categorized as organic. There are a few ways, though, that you can purchase organic foods without the cost being too prohibitive. One way is to make sure that you commit to purchasing all of the things that you love, organically. If you love green beans, or carrots, or beets, then make the commitment never to purchase the non-organic version of these items. Once you commit to buying the organic variety of these specific items, you’ll be able to keep an eye out for sales, you’ll start to learn what a fair price is, and what price is a little higher than it needs to be.
A great way to save money is to always make a grocery list. Years ago, our relatives used to think nothing of writing a page for their grocery list. They knew what meals they were going to make for the week and what groceries they’d need to prepare those meals. They had a plan. Now, however, many shoppers go into a grocery store unsure of what they need, and then often wind up purchasing much more than they actually need. Because of this, they tend to waste food, throwing away the items that they didn’t end up using that have spoiled.
Once a week, sit down and decide what meals you’re going to cook all week long. If you go out one evening a week, add that evening in; and it’s always a good idea to give yourself a “whatever” night, where you eat anything from leftovers to cereal or eggs. A list of the rest of the meals you’ll consume during the week will help you better understand what you need to get during your grocery excursions. And if you know this, you’ll only buy what you truly need. In the long run, you’ll save money which you can then use towards your organic items.
Organic products may cost a bit more than the groceries that you’ve become used to purchasing, but the slight cost variation is definitely worth it when you realize how much healthier you’ll be eating. Most people report that they not only feel better, but that they look better after eating organic foods for awhile. Many people reported losing a number of pounds after their switch to organic foods.
